Ella Hodges was born on 29 June 1902 in Moniac, Charlton County, Georgia. She was the daughter of William Lee Hodges of Moniac, Charlton Co., Georgia and Victoria Sweat Hodges of Baldwin County, Florida. Ella was their seventh child and fifth daughter of this union. She had five sisters and two brothers.

Moniac, Charlton County, Georgia is below the main Georgia state line, in the area that dips down into Florida. Years ago, this area was considered the “Marriage Capital of the World.” Floridians who could not endure their state’s waiting period before tying the knot would cross the state line into Charlton County to wed there.
The 90 mile band between Clay County, Florida and Charlton County, Georgia, contains the richest titanium reserves in the nation. A swamp, 20 by 40 miles in size takes up one-third of the county’s land. At one time, his impenetrable wilderness served as a sanctuary for the Seminoles and escaped slaves.
Marriages
At the age of 16, Ella Hodges married Charles Henry Hamilton, age 46, on 14 July 1918, in Effingham County, Georgia. According to her daughter Evelyn, the middle name Mae was not a given name she received from her parents…. but was a name of endearment that Charles attached to her. They later divorced.
On 8 November 1948, at the age of 45, Ella was sealed to Mile Gibbons in the Manti temple.

Charles and Ella had three children: Evelyn Louise (1920 – 2010), Earl Hodges (1924- 2005) and Myron Leon (1927 – 1995).

Ella was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at the age of eight. She was a faithful member until her death.

Death
Ella passed away in Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada on June 16, 1968, as a result of injuries suffered in a fire. She rests at East Lawn Memorial Hills cemetery in Provo, Utah.
