David Hamilton was the seventh child of John and Sarah Fleming Hamilton. He was born in Chester, Hampden Co., Massachusetts, on 3 January 1800. He had three older sisters and four older brothers. His younger brother Asa was the last child born to John and Sarah.

He was raised in Chester.
Marriage
At the age of 27, he married Abigail Meacham on 15 April, 1827. They lived eight miles northwest of Chester, in Washington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Between 1828 and 1830 they moved 4 miles west to Middlefield, where they built their home.

Family life
David and Abigail built a house on the road north from the center, near the Peru, Massachusetts line. The home was next to his in-laws, Phillip and Abigail Leland Meacham, who lived across the road a short distance, but further south.
They raised their children there and made a home for David’s aged father and mother (John and Sarah), who were natives of Pelham but raised their family in Chester.
Death
David died in Middlefield on 6 May 1857. He was 57 years old and is buried in the Middlefield Center cemetery, Hampshire Co. Massachusetts, as are his parents, John and Sarah Fleming Hamilton, and his in-laws Phillip and Abigail Leland Meacham. His wife, Abigail is buried in Rantoul, Champaign County, Illinois, where three of her six sons lived and owned local businesses.
